Hubert, Archie Franklin

Passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on Sunday December 17, 2017, in his 89th year. Beloved husband of Barbara. Loving father of Susan (Steve Schwartz and Andrew (Sarah Oosterhuis). Cherished grandfather of Graeme, Melinda and Emily. Survived by his sister Devina and predeceased by his parents Norman and Hilda and by his brothers Robert, Melvin and Gilbert.
Born in Simcoe, Ontario and later moved to Tavistock, Ontario where at 5 years old delivered milk from the nearby farm. His family moved to Seaforth where he played hockey, and played in the pipe band. Archie was recognized for his talents as a singer and artist. He attended Stratford Normal School to become a teacher and spent summers at Grand Bend working in the Butcher Shop with his long time friend Ron Sills. Archie was invited to Oshawa to teach Phys Ed at North Simcoe School (Dr. S.J. Phillips School). He moved to E.A. Lovell School as Vice-Principal and became Principal at Conant P.S, T.R. McEwen S.P.S and Adelaide McLaughlin P.S. In his retirement, Archie taught ESL at Durham College, spent many years as a waterfront director at Camp Winnebagoe and later directed Bark Lake Leadership Training Camp, and was a Red Cross Swim Examiner. He loved working with his hands, was very well read and enjoyed canoeing. Archie’s greatest joy in life was being at the cottage on Monck Lake. He couldn’t wait to get there and didn’t want to leave. Many summers were spent building, canoeing and spending time with good friends. In winter, he enjoyed skidooing and ice skating.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the Lakeridge Health Oshawa Foundation would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Armstrong Funeral Home, 124 King Street East, Oshawa. For online condolences please visit www.armstrongfuneralhome.net.
