Obituary for Edward Steve Kowalczyk
KOWALCZYK, Edward -
Peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa with family at his side, on Monday January 09, 2023 in his 67th year. Dear father of Boston and wife Christy, he will always be lovingly remembered by his granddaughters, Audrey and Anna, as Grandpa Eddy. Brother to Helen and uncle to Brook; Ed always put others first, taking care of his sister even though he was ill himself.
Ed was an avid gardener, but even a bigger hockey fan, loving everything to do with the Boston Bruins, even naming his son after the team. Throughout the years, Ed attended NHL games across North America and owned a hockey card store. Ed helped build the world’s largest hockey stick,and travelled the country showing it off for others to enjoy. Ed was very involved with helping the community and will forever be remembered for this. Ed was a founding member of the “Save our Oshawa Generals” campaign to keep the team in the city and helping them get their new arena downtown. Ed attended council meetings and ran for Mayor of Oshawa to help promote the campaign which also sought to revitalize the downtown and better the community. Ed was former Chairperson to NASC Hockey and volunteered years of time helping children’s sports in Oshawa; through Storie Park and running the Checker’s Hockey Tournament. Ed was a fixture at arenas across the city, especially the Civic Auditorium.
Ed was a lifelong City of Oshawa employee providing over 35 years of service in various positions. Most fittingly, he was a Zamboni driver for most of his career. Ed was well respected throughout the City making lifelong friends while there.
Ed operated College Hill Tours providing bus service to various sporting events and concerts. He was also the founder of the Oshawa Men’s Ball Hockey League.
Ed’s positive attitude and commitment to the community will always be remembered. His wishes were to not have a funeral, however a celebration of life will be held at a place that is very dear to him, Storie Park, 101 Mill St, Oshawa on Saturday, February 11th between 12 and 3.
Ed will be laid to rest with his parents at St. Wolodymyr & St. Olha Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in Ed’s honour to ‘Oshawa NASC Hockey’ which will be put forward to the players assistance fund. Donations will be collected by cheque only at Armstrong Funeral Home, 124 King St E, Oshawa.
