To send flowers in memory of Johanna "Ann" Vanderzwet (de Bruyn), please visit our Heartfelt Sympathies Store.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Oma, SuperOma, sister and aunt, Johanna (Ann) Vanderzwet. Ann, 85 of St. Catharines (Oshawa) passed away June 20, 2019 with grace and peace.
Mom was born July 9, 1933 in Den Haag, Netherlands. In 1958 she completed her nursing training and came to Canada in 1959 to pursue work in her field. When she arrived in Oshawa she found not only a position at Oshawa General Hospital, but the man who was to become her husband of 49 years, John Vanderzwet (2009). Mom worked for over 30 years at OGH in labour and delivery. We are so proud that she helped bring thousands of new lives into this world, including those of family and friends. It was always special when someone told us that mom was their nurse for the birth of their baby.
Mom is survived by her two children, Jake (Valerie) and Irene Kiers (Mike). She also leaves behind her cherished granddaughters Natalie Hryshko (Alex) and Elisha Lundy (Jeremy) as well as her bubbly great granddaughter Ella Hryshko. Mom is also survived by her loving sister Irene DeBruyn (Netherlands) who she saw and spoke with often.
Ann will be fondly remembered by her extended family, Helen Vandermeer, Nel Jawny, Nancy Mazzochi, Sophie Hroncich (John), Frank Vanderzwet (Linda) and many nieces and nephews.
Ann will also be remembered by those in her retired nurses luncheon group and her swimming friends. She will also be missed by those in her day program in St. Catharines, a program she eagerly attended three days a week.
Our thanks go out to the PSW’s who came to help mom. Your kindheartedness in your care for mom is greatly appreciated.
We would also like to extend our deepest thanks to the nursing staff at Niagara Health System for their understanding and compassion.
As per mom’s wishes, there will be a private service at a later date.
Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated.
