Obituary for Jozefa Michno

MICHNO, Józefa

Although our hearts are filled with gratitude for the gift of her life, it is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Józefa Michno (nee: Horbacewicz). She died peacefully at Extedicare Long-Term Care Home in Oshawa on March 11, 2022, in her 100th year of life. Józefa was a loving mother to her daughter Teresa (Antoni Kuziomko) and Jim (Barbara Bialy). She was a beloved grandmother to her four grandchildren – Linda (Ted Kucharski), Tommy (Amelia), Adam (Blair), Nick (Michelle); her seven great-grandchildren – Christopher (Allison), Alexandra, Victoria, Emily, Dylan, Frazer, and Charlie, and one great-great grandson Hogan. Józefa is survived by her brother Czeslaw (Zofia), and many nieces and nephews in Canada, along with relatives in Poland, Australia and the United States. Born in Tarasowo, Poland, Józefa lived through deportation to slave labour in Germany, four years in a Displaced Persons’ Camp and emigration to the Brazilian wilderness before settling in Oshawa in 1958 with her family. She was predeceased by her husband Franciszek Michno; parents, Józef and Konstancja Horbacewicz; her sisters Bronislawa (Alfons Suchto); Weronika (Julian Dobranowski); Jadwiga (Wladyslaw Moskalewicz); her brother Jan Horbacewicz (Helena). From among her many qualities, family, neighbours and friends often commented on Józefa’s generosity, her hospitality, her forthrightness and her flair for bringing humour to life events. However, Józefa’s most cherished legacy is her children and their families. She always made her family her first priority. This care and solicitude she extended also to her extended family members – those near and far. Her family is grateful to the staff at Extendicare who cared for Józefa with kindness, and respect for the final years of her life, and to Dr. Fung, her family doctor prior to that.
