Eulogy for Peter Kornylo

Peter was born in Oshawa June 23, 1931 to parents John & Pearl, the second son of six children and he attended Holy Cross school. His love of the outdoors took him to many occupations working for the Department of Highways, delivering bread from the Oshawa Bakery and retiring from Whitby General Hospital as a Security Officer. As a young man, he and two buddies often went on fishing and hunting trips, travelling Ontario to the many parks, enjoying their time together – outdoors with their trusted dogs beside them.

Marrying Olga March 23, 1973, they began their life together, travelling Ontario to many Provincial Parks, camping, boating, fishing and enjoying nature.

Their love of their dogs, Tisha, Tanya, Penny and Vanna, as companions brought them so much happiness. Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, you would find them outdoors enjoying all kinds of weather, exercising their dogs!

Peter was an excellent cook, preparing many meals, especially his borscht, which he shared with us. His dogs also enjoyed home meals by Peter.

When Olga became ill, Peter became a devoted, conscientious home caregiver, attending to Olga’s health and wellbeing. When hospital care was required, first at Oshawa, then Whitby and eventually the long-term care home in Bowmanville, then Extendicare Oshawa, Peter and Vanna would spend morning to night comforting her. His devotion to Olga was very special. He dedicated his life caring for Olga and his beloved dogs. When Vanna passed on, Peter then cooked and cared for the neighbour’s dogs.

When Peter entered Hillsdale, all the staff loved him and in turn he gave them kindness and respect. He was always helping his dinner partners at the dinner table in the dining room. We so enjoyed our visits with Peter, taking him outside as weather permitted, enjoying the beautiful, tranquil garden and a place of peace and quiet, feeding the chipmunks, squirrels, blue jays and birds, listening to the birds singing. He always reminded us to bring the peanuts and birdfeed.

The Kornylo family wish to extend a sincere thank you to the Armstrong family for providing Peter a peaceful journey home to reunite with Olga and continue their travels exploring the great outdoors and enjoying nature with their trusted pets beside them.

Working shifts at Whitby Hospital, following a snowfall, he would always clear the snow from the staff vehicles. On the morning of Monday, April 25, Peter asked one of the staff to please call a cab as he wanted to go home...
