Obituary for Peter Wiech

Peter Wiech
It is with great sadness we announce the death of Peter Wiech, peacefully, with family by his side, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Saturday June 3rd, 2017 at the age of 98. Pre-deceased by his wife of 39 years, Sophie, he is survived by his son Adam, daughter-in-law Kathryn and two grandchildren; Krista and Samantha, who will fondly remember growing up with a grandfather so actively involved in their lives.
Peter was born on April 28, 1919 in Zagnansk, Poland to Adam and Marianna Wiech. As a young man he joined the local Polish partisans at the start of WWII. Taken by the German occupation army in an area sweep he was sent to a slave labour camp from the age of 20 to 24 until liberation by Allied troops. Upon his release he was recruited by the US Occupation Forces and served 18 months honourably as a private in a service unit.
Discharged in 1948, as a Displaced Person (DP) he chose to immigrate to Canada to build a new future. He worked 2 years in a gold mine in Val D’or, Quebec. Upon discharge of his DP obligation with the Government of Canada he found new opportunity in Oshawa with the opening of the General Motors south plant. He eventually completed 32 years at GM, retiring in 1981.
Peter married in 1960 and raised a loving family with his wife Sophie and they eventually sponsored extended family from Poland to come to Canada for the opportunity at a life they might not have otherwise been afforded.
He will forever be remembered for his great contribution to his family; working hard to ensure a better life for them than he had known in his youth. He was a generous man who loved being part of the Polish community in Oshawa including the Polish Veterans Association, Polish National Association (Br 7) as well as being a dedicated member of St. Hedwig’s Parish.
Peter’s family would like to extend a special thank you to all the friends, neighbours and family who have assisted Peter over the last few years, and the incredible staff at Lakeridge Health who cared for him during his brief illness.
A funeral is scheduled for Thursday June 8, 2017, 11 am at St. Hedwig’s Church, Oshawa with a reception to follow at General Sikorski Veteran’s Lower Hall at 1pm. Visitations will be held Wednesday June 7, 2017 at ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME in Oshawa from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm respectively. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Peter’s life.
