We are saddened to learn of the passing of Raymond Edward Parfitt at just 99 years of age.

Ray was born in Oshawa where he grew up and lived almost all of his life in the company of many friends and a loving extended family. He is survived by his daughter Pat MacPherson, and his grandchildren Alan (Alexis) and Laurie and two great grandchildren. Ray was predeceased by his wife Gladys, his son Randy, his parents George and Olive, and his brother George.

Ray was a veteran of WWII serving in Europe for three years. He went ashore on Juno Beach ten days after D-Day and fought with the Canadian Second Corps across France during the Battle of Normandy, and then northward along the coast of France, Belgium, and Holland. He was present at the Battle of the Scheldt River Delta in southern Holland where in October 1944 immense casualties were taken by the Canadians to obtain free access to the major seaport at Antwerp. On VE Day, 5 May, 1945 Ray was at the German submarine pen at Whilemshaven where almost the entire fleet of German U-boats was capture by the Canadians. Ray continued to serve for another year in Europe helping with the recovery of millions of displaced civilians that desperately needed food and shelter. He returned to Oshawa in the summer of 1946 and soon gained employment with General Motors where he worked for many years.

His family and his country stand in deep gratitude for Ray’s contribution to our peace and prosperity that we now enjoy. He, along with so many others of his generation, stepped forward and offered their service when it was most sorely needed. We must never forget what Ray and others sacrificed for all of us.
