Obituary for Rose Repa (Bondaruk)

REPA, Rose (née Bondaruk)
November 19th, 1918 – April 26th, 2020

Passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Health at the age of 101, Rose was a beautiful, kind and loving person whose absence will be deeply missed.

Born on November 19th, 1918 in the village of Moskalivka, in the north east of Ukraine, Rose immigrated to Canada with her family, at the age of 10 years old, in 1929.

Daughter of the late Moses and Pelagia Bondaruk. Beloved wife for 32 years of the late Alexander Repa.

Devoted and cherished mother of her daughters Deanna and Rosemarie and of her son-in-laws that she was proud to call her « sons », John Hottot and Jean-Yves Fortier.

Predeceased by her siblings Marie and John she is survived by her sister Olga, as well as her nephews Serge, Paul, Michael, James, John and nieces Louise, Janie and their families.

Rose was the dedicated and proud Grandmother of Dawn, Kristy (Keven), Nadia (Guillaume) and Karine (Ghyslain) and the dear Great Grandmother of Cameron, Zoe, Félix Antoine, Frederique, Justin and Jessica Rose.

Rose lived a rewarding and full life. She was a strong, determined and independent woman, having lost her husband Alexander when she was only 54 years old; at what time she learned to drive and continued to drive until the age of 93! She was a kind and generous person who was always helping her family and many friends. Rose was a good listener and showed great empathy to others, in time of need.

She maintained the family home until the age of 96. At that time, she gave up the family house and was welcomed to live with and be cared for by her daughter Deanna and son-in law, John.

After arriving in Canada in 1929, with her parents and siblings, Rose lived in Fork River, Manitoba where she worked on the family farm and went to school until the family moved to Toronto in 1937. She met Alexander in Toronto and they married in 1940. She worked in hotel catering services and as a seamstress, until moving to Oshawa in 1945, where they had a house built.

During the years of raising a young family, Rose worked in her father’s Oshawa tailor shop, where she became a highly proficient seamstress for both men and women’s clothes. Following this, she enjoyed her work at Murray Johnston’s Men’s Wear for 18 years as the main seamstress, where her sense of humour was enjoyed by all. She continued to sew for family members even in her 90’s and kept her electric sewing machine, which impressed many.

Rose was a member of St John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox church. As a talented seamstress she volunteered her time in sewing clergy vestments. Upon her retirement, Rose was an enthusiastic and active member of the choir for many years at the Oshawa Seniors Club.

She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, gardening, cooking, baking and travelling, taking her granddaughters Dawn and Kristy on several trips. She also accompanied her daughter Rosemarie, Jean-Yves and her grandchildren Nadia and Karine on many enjoyable trips.

Her Ukrainian culinary specialties were appreciated by all. Rose had a close connection and happiness participating in family activities. Even at 101 years old she assisted John in making cabbage rolls!

Rose will be greatly missed and fondly remembered as a loving mother and cherished grandmother with her engaging personality, empathy, sense of humour and love of life.

Our sincere gratitude to Dr. Albert Hanna for his compassionate and excellent care.
The family would also like to thank the doctors and nurses on the cardiology and palliative care units of Lakeridge Health.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date due to the present public health circumstances.
