Obituary for Fenia Samochin (Klen)

Fenia Samochin (Klen)
With heartfelt sorrow, the family of Fenia Samochin announces her passing away peacefully on Friday November 11 at the age of 98 years. She was residing at the Extendicare Nursing Home in Brampton.

Devoted and loving mother of Luba and John, cherished grandmother of Alexander and Adam, and loyal spouse of the late John. She will be missed by her extended family in the Ukraine and her many friends in the Oshawa area.

Fenia was a hard working and very optimistic person who lived through many changes in her life. In her teen years she lived through the brutal farming collectivization of Ukraine under the former Soviet government. Then she and her family of 9 siblings narrowly survived through the Holodomor, the forced famine of Ukraine in 1932. During WWII she was relocated to Germany and after the war she moved to England where she met her husband, John, and later welcomed her daughter, Luba. In 1955 the family emigrated to Canada and settled in Oshawa where her son, John, was born.

Fenia worked for many years at General Motors and was one of the first women to work on the assembly line. She had a love for life, willingness to work very hard, eternal optimism and stubborn refusal to let obstacles stop her from meeting her goals. She had a wonderful sense of humour, keen interest in current events and emphasised education, encouraging her children to seize the opportunities she had been denied by historical events. Her spirit will be missed while her memory continues to inspire.

Resting at the Armstrong Funeral Home 124 King Stree East (905) 433-4711, for Visitation on Sunday November 13 from 7pm-9pm. Funeral Service was held at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church on Monday, November 14 at 11am. Interment at St. Wolodymyr and St. Olha Cemetery.
