Obituary for Joyce McMillan (Sandrock)

Joyce McMillan (Sandrock)
McMILLAN, Joyce (nee Sandrock), peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa in her 85th year. Beloved wife for 65 years of Rev. Garth McMillan; cherished mother of Brian (Marcia), Sandi (Terry), and Leigh Smith who passed away on October 17, 2014, (Barry Smith). Proud grandma of Jenn McMillan, Mike McMillan, Christine Pearson (Andrew Pearson) Stacey Horning, Alex Smith (Deanna Smith) and Jessica Smith. Proud great grandma "GG" of Mattigan Amber Leigh Johnston. Dear sister of Sandy Sandrock (Maureen). Aunt of Todd Sandrock (Sharla), Tara Laderoute, Sean Sandrock, and their families. Daughter of the late Henry & Muryelle Sandrock. Joyce enjoyed a rewarding career and a beautiful and loving marriage with Garth; theirs was a full life traveling and exploring the world together. Joyce loved the water, as one of the first two women to be hired in Ottawa in the 1940s as a lifeguard, and then as an avid swimmer through her life; as a member of the Red Hat Society Joyce gained many special friendships and enjoyed great fun at their social activities. Joyce was active in her church, at Gentle Shepherd, and then with Faith Place; she, with Garth, made lasting friendships in Florida over years of winter travel. Beautiful in spirit and in person, Joyce exuded happiness in bright clothes, manicured and boldly painted nails, unique jewelry and watches, cheering on the Blue Jays, and of course, enjoying an ice cream at Costco after a good shop. Joyce and Garth's love and friendship created a large, closely connected family that celebrates and enjoys time together often. Our deepest and heartfelt thanks to nurses Ann, Stephanie, Karen, David, Brandon, and Cathy for making Joyce's final 24 hours with her family so special. Your kindness was appreciated by Joyce and her family more than you will ever know. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre, Oshawa would be greatly appreciated by Joyce's family. Family and friends are welcome to visit on Friday, March 17th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME, 124 King Street East, Oshawa. A Memorial Celebration of Joyce's Life will be held in the chapel at the funeral home on Saturday, March 18th, at 11:00 a.m.
