Obituary

Borek, Sophie Mary (née Zeglen) July 16, 1924 - May 6, 2020
We are sad to announce the passing of Sophie, quietly, on the morning of May 6, 2020.
Born in Poland, Sophie came to Canada with her family when she was a young child. She grew up in Toronto, where she met and married Chester, and together they settled in Oshawa to raise a family. Sadly, Chester passed away in 2001.
Sophie leaves behind a loving family: sons Bob (Dian), Larry (Judy), and Ron (Sue); daughter Lorraine; grandchildren Tony, Mandi, Sean, Amelia, and Loretta; and great-grandchildren Tyler and Cameron.
Sophie loved summers at the cottage, music, dancing, and any reason for a family get-together; her smile could light up a room. Her sense of humour never faded, and her warmth, kindness and patience will forever be missed.
Our family is deeply grateful for the support and care that Sophie received from all the staff at the Ellington Retirement Home part of the Elliott Community in Guelph.
Due to the current situation, a small family service will be held Saturday, May 9, 2020, in Oshawa. Interment at Thornton Cemetery in Oshawa. We look forward to coming together with family and friends at a later time to remember her life. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to Canadian Cancer Society.

Sophie was my godmother. I have the fondest memories of her. Always gentle, kind and loving and so proud of her family.
My mother, Jean Chwalka (nee Zasowski) knew Sophia and her family in Poland and they all emigrated to Canada when they were very young. When they came to Canada they continued a very strong friendship that lasted all their lives.
Before our Mom passed, we used to drive our Mom to visit Sophie in Oshawa and then when Sophie moved to Guelph, I used to help my Mom phone Sophia at her new residence.
When I think of Sophie I think of kindness and gentleness. Such a lovely human being.
Our family is so very sorry for your loss. Another great Polish lady of that era is gone. I just know that our Mom and your Mom are up there right now and looking down and smiling, all whilst reminiscing about their youth, the dances, the many Polish foods they cooked and enjoyed.
We have been loved by the best!!
(I have forwarded a picture from one of the last times our Mom’s were together.)

We are thinking of all of you at this time and remembering Sophie as a beautiful and gracious lady. With memories at the cottage--garter snake in the hammock--skunk in the outhouse, to the many card games played at night with good friends, Anne and Walt ..these bring smiles to our faces and hope they do the same for you. Ron will be sure to let his parents know that Sophie is in good hands, rejoined with Chester when the cemetery re-opens for us to visit them. Rest in peace Sophie.

Thank you Barb and Ron for the thoughtful comments. I’m glad I missed the skunk in the outhouse episode. Maybe I was too young or not there but still glad I missed it! I have fond memories of Anne and Walt. My parents enjoyed being with them. Every time I drive by there house on Rossland Rd I think of them.

I remember she always had a smile on her face. You would never know of any troubles she was having because it was more important for her to be a great host for her family. She always had some kind of amazing polish food on hand whenever we would visit. Her cooking was always something to look forward to whenever we visited, and she always had a most positive attitude about everything. It was a real blessing to have her in my life and she will be sorely missed. Relax now Babcia, you have earned your rest.

47 years ago, May 5 1973, my husband Bob asked me to marry him. We then went to ask my Dad's permission (they were in a drive in!) and afterwards Bob and I drove to the Borek home on Simcoe North to share the news with Mom and Dad Borek. They were so gracious and welcoming and I count myself blessed to have had Sophie as my mother-in-law for 46 years years now. She was there for me, even coming up to New Liskeard for 6 weeks to take care of her 3 grand children when I was in hospital for 6 weeks in the early 80's. Many years later when she was in her 80's and 90's in her condo in Oshawa, no matter how many of us showed up at her door, without warning, she always amazed us by throwing together a big meal within a very short time, and no one went hungry! Yesterday when she passed away a big hole was left in the family constellation. We will all miss her very much.
